- In 1789 the French Crown suffered financial crises. He appealed to the clergy and the nobility to surrender their immunity from taxes. A meeting of estate general (Classes) the clergy, nobility and commons was called but they refused to votefor taxes, The third estate declared itself assembly and thus the Revolution began. Anarchy spread. They king was made prisoner and was later on executed, Philosophers like Montesquieu, Voltaire and Rousseau provided the ideological inspiration. Rousseau’s ideal of “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity” became the motto of the Revolution. The Revolution swept away the old feudal system.
