Act of Settlement (1761):
- It provided the law for the succession to the English throne. William of Orange and Mary, the joint sovereigns had no child and Queen Anne who was the next successor also had no successor. The Act of settlement provided that the English crown would be worn by Princess Sophia, grand daughter of James. I and the hiers born to her. A Catholic cannot be a successor to the throne a sovereign cannot marry a catholic.
